Prospect and Refuge
Prospect and refuge are big factors used in interior design.
Both components contain human needs that will make a home, place, or space feasible.
PROSPECT
Prospect refers to an open environment. For example, a sun
room is a room with windows all around to allow humans to view the outdoors and
their surroundings. It is visually pleasing and a necessity.
REFUGE
Refuge is a place that makes humans feel safe, secure, and sometimes unseen. It can be an escape along with just a place to relax and be alone.
PROSPECT AND REFUGE THEORY
The prospect and refuge theory describes how humans want the best of both worlds in their spaces. This is used in design to help people feel most comfortable in their created spaces. People need a space that is secure and safe while being able to experience new things. Such as a cabin in the middle of the woods white ceiling to floor windows. The location serves as a refuge along with the closed walls while the tall windows represent prospect. People are able to feel homey while viewing everything around them and relax.
